Turning University Research Into a North Carolina Startup

Appalachian State researcher Dr. Zachary Russell is developing an AI-enhanced robotic microscope designed to help veterinarians and farmers detect parasites in livestock and poultry faster and more accurately.

Supported by NCInnovation, the technology has the potential to move beyond the university setting and into real-world agricultural use—strengthening one of North Carolina’s largest industries while creating new commercialization opportunities in the state.
