IMPACT THROUGH ACCOUNTABILITY
Measuring outcomes is essential to understanding the impact of NCInnovation’s work. These metrics help us improve our programs and processes, make data-driven decisions, and communicate NCI’s impact to key stakeholders. By reporting outcomes, NCI demonstrates transparency and accountability in managing its state-funded endowment and fulfills its legislative mandate to share performance data.
The metrics on this page will continue to evolve as NCI’s initial pilot projects reach completion and more data become available.
47 GRANTS AWARDED
NCI has awarded 47 Statewide Innovation Grants to 14 UNC System universities across its first three grant cycles. The program offers two funding cycles per year.

To date, NCI has awarded over $37 million in funding through its Statewide Innovation Grants program. Even amidst this significant infusion of grant funding, demand is strong across the state for additional innovation support.
14 UNC SYSTEM INSTITUTIONS FUNDED
Fourteen UNC System universities have received NCI grants. Of the 15 institutions likely to apply (excluding the NC School of Science and Mathematics and UNC School of the Arts), NCI has awarded funding to all but one. This count reflects only institutions that received a grant or subaward, not partnering institutions without funding.
251 APPLICANTS
A total of 251 unique faculty members have applied for NCI funding. This number excludes resubmissions, so the overall number of applications is considerably higher.
$78,004,743 REQUESTED
Applicants invited to submit full proposals requested over $78 million. Full applications are by invitation only, following NCI’s pre-application review, which means the total funding requested in pre-applications is even higher.
